Greenways

As humans living here in the city, we have gotten a little far away from our roots. This is way I am proposing a test project called Greenwalks. These green walks are normal city side walk that have had a layer of artificial grass laid upon and fused to them. Now this grass is not just cheap and tacky Astroturf, The Greenwalks will be composed of millions of little soft nanotube grass blades made from one of the most abundant elements in the universe, carbon. This grass will be designed to feel just like the front lawns and parks of your childhood which, will hopefully make for a happier city.

One of the big downsides of reel grass is its ability to hinder the progress of wheeled machines, like bicycles and strollers. The GreenWalks are not composed of normal crass though. When a section of the nanotube grass senses the curvature of a wheel it will automatically lay down flat to provide a smooth ride. Also, sense the artificial grass is networked and controlled by a cloud computer made up by thousands of processors embedded under and grass, any section of the grass can communicate to another section so that if a wheel is sensed in one section, the section following it will also lay down in preparation for the wheel. In the future these Greenwalks should give the city a little injection of green to combat the mixed tones of gray and makes up so many cites.

My 89 minuets of (holy crap there’s a zombie behind you)! bliss

Like many of adrenaline junkies my most blissful moments are when the world is flying past me, aliens are creeping up on me, or as in this case a rapidly spreading virus is turning the people around me in to zombies of the fast moving type. For this moment of bliss I viewed the movie Quarantine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quarantine_(2008_film).

Here is a simple check list that made this movie one of the best zombie movies sense Shaun of the dead.

The sometimes crazily use of pseudoscience to explain things when the site inevitably hits the fan. (Check)
The use of the fast moving zombies (rage infected) from 28 days later. (Check)
The creative use of space. Normally a zombie movie can engulf a hole movie studio and thousands of stand-ins, but Quarantine only used (infected?) a small cast in a run down apartment building in LA. (Check)
The infection of every human character in the end. (Check)
No modern day apocalypse. (Check)

Although this movie looked to many other zombie movies for inspiration I think Quarantine was a perfect balance for suspense and pure horror.

New Media Saturday School advert

I calibrated with Amy King on this project.
Are idea was to create an advertisement for a fictional new media Saturday School (www.herron.iupui.edu/community/classes/saturday) like course for middle school and high school students. The advertisement would out line and run though all the steps of character design for game or illustration purposes.

Here is a sample character that we designed using the proses that will be outlined in the advert (brainstorming, sketching, final design on paper, and finally tracing in to the computer)

A video of the process will be uploaded just as soon as midterms stop trying to kill me.

Globes of goo

What the bleep do we know was a vary odd movie. By the time human hormones started being visualized as singing/ dancing globes of goo it dawned on me that this movie was obviously Canadian or British. I did like how the movie seamlessly transitioned from one field of science to an other, from playing quantum basketball to dancing with flubber. During the quantum basketball scene they really did do a good job in explaining the observer effect, in which there are always a million possibilities for the universe floating out there until an observer is present, at witch time all the possibilities condense in to one. I have alway herd this phenomenon explained differently (a proton beam fires a stream of protons at two slots and according to the math the protons should theoretically be going though both slots creating a shadow of two slots on a back wall, but when scientists finally observed the experiment they discovered that the protons chose to go though both slots at the same time creating a wave like pattern on the back wall.)

Class on the 15th

The class on the 15th started out will enough, With a conversation on the courses first egg project. Sadly though the class conversation descended in to an infinite loop of paltry excreted boredom. interrupted for a time by Beth’s surrealistic photography. Unfortunately the sharp prick of an oncoming migraine and the formidable black hole of the algebraic logic class fallowing N485 caused me retreat by to my apartment for medication.

This is a joint project between me and Amy King.

The Non-western Perception of Time

A Hopi woman's dance which was shot in 1879.
The dance is related to the Hopi's perception of time
.

This is an excerpt from the Keywords: Better than yelling at the T.V. blog about a Benjamin Lee Whorf (a linguist), who in the early 20th century spent some time with the Hopi Indian tribe.

"

So for the phase nouns we have made a formless item, “time.” We have made it by using “a time,” i.e. an occasion or a phase, in the pattern of a mass noun, just as from “a summer” we make “summer” in the pattern of a mass noun. Thus with our binomial formula we can say and think “a moment of time, a second of time, a year of time.” Let me again point out that the pattern is simply that of “a bottle of milk” or “a piece of cheese.” Thus we are assisted to imagine that “a summer” actually contains or consists of such-and-such a quantity of “time.”

In Hopi however all phase terms, like “summer, morning,” etc., are not nouns but a kind of adverb, to use the nearest SAE analogy. They are a formal part of speech by themselves, distinct from nouns, verbs, and even other Hopi “adverbs.” … One does not say “it’s a hot summer” or “summer is hot”; summer is not hot, summer is only WHEN conditions are hot, WHEN heat occurs. One does not say “THIS summer,” but “summer now” or “summer recently.” There is no objectification, as a region, an extent, a quantity, of the subjective duration feeling. Nothing is suggested about time except the perpetual “getting later” of it. And so there is no basis here for a formless item answering to our “time.”

N-201: Assignment, wandering fountain square edition.

I had some time before class on Wednesday. So I decided to fire up the old DSLR.
